Title: Coastal landformsDate: 24th October 2008 Time: 1100 - 1800* Location: East Lothian Coast vicinity of North Berwick and Dunbar Meet: 1100 Next to Platform 2 at Waverley Station, Edinburgh, beside "The Pasty Shop" and opposite the escalators. Look for the man with the clipboards! If you plan to arrive by car consider leaving your car at New Street car park. OR at 1145 Car park at Tyninghame Links at GR 591847. It can be most easily reached by leaving the eastboundA1, at the first Dunbar roundabout, take first exit. Drive to next roundabout and take first exit A199 back west towards East Linton and North Berwick. After 2.5 kms turn right onto the A198 and drive through Tyninghame a further 2.5kms until you reach a right turn, shown on OS map as Limetree Walk. Follow this to the road end and you will be in the car park. |

Aims: Identifying coastal landforms and examining the processes responsible Content: Depositional landforms including beach profiles, berms, dunes, storm beaches, spits, tombolos and salt marshes. Erosional landforms including cliffs, stacks, geos, caves, wave cut notches and platforms. Evidence of processes at work including wave action, abrasion, attrition, corrosion,weathering, mass movement, wind action, plant colonisation and longshore drift. Elements of local geology and wider contexts like sea level changes. Plan is to visit Tyne Mouth, St Baldred's Cradle and Ravensheugh Sands, Seacliff and The Gegan. High tide on the day is around midday. |

Every effort will be made to adhere to times. Please note that the study time runs until 1800 to allow us to visit two contrasting areas of the coastline. Participants are encouraged to bring cameras and pencils. All other field study material and equipment is provided. A CD Rom with photographs of all the sites visited will be included, and can be used in class. Conditions at the coast range from pleasant to windy and exposed. Please bring adequate rain and wind protection depending on the forecast. Bring a packed lunch and refreshments. The course involves a significant amount of walking on paths, sand and rocky beach areas. Please bring sensible footwear. |
